Search Engine Optimization is basically ensuring that your website ranks highly in the search engines for the most relevant keywords that are related to your website so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your site on top. The process involves optimizing your websites content and code to make it easy for search engines to crawl and then link building.

Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask Jeeves are the most popular search engines. The search engines want to finding the most valuable results and deter spam pages. So the search engines keep their processes and ranking algorithms top secret.

There are hundred of factors search engines use to rank the listings but these factors and the importance of each may change continually. Algorithms can differ so widely that a web page that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank #200 in another search engine.

Every new website need to be “submitted” to the search engines in order to be indexed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to crawl its contents. It can take anywhere form a couple of day to a few weeks for all the search engines to find that link and commence indexing you new site.

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues.

If you chose to hire a professional they would first look at you site and make some recommendations to increase your web traffic and search engine rankings. Then you could choose to have their ongoing consultation and reporting and they will continue to make improvements plus sustain and build on the traffic flow to your site. If you decided to do this the search engine optimization experts would then go to work with you web designer to integrate a plan of attack.

Search engine optimization experts done not come cheap, so the other option is to take a training course. That way you will be able to do the work your self and save your self a lot of money in the long run.
