There was a time in which the telephone company did not use the 10 digit numerical system that they are currently using. It was only whenever these telephone started to become plentiful but they needed a system which would be able to handle all the different phones that were in use.

Of course, automation had a lot to do with the fact that the 10 digit numerical system came about as well. As they were moving away from the type of system where an operator needed to sit in the switchboard and manually plug in different phone calls, they needed a more accurate way to be able to depict where call was coming from and where it was that it was going.

You are, no doubt familiar with the 10 digit telephone system that is now being used but taking a close look at it can actually be quite interesting. Here is a little bit about what you can learn by following along with the various parts of these area codes and telephone numbers. Understanding this can help you in a number of different ways.

The area code is found in the first three digits of the telephone number and it is a number that is assigned to a specific area within the country. These areas tend to be rather small but in some instances, they can span across several different towns and in rare instances, and even cross state lines. There are other cases in which the area code is assigned to a specific city and if there are enough telephone lines within the city, several area codes might be assigned to it.

Whenever they first came up with the 10 digit numerical system, they never saw the day whenever it could be outdated. Although we are not getting close to using up all the area codes as of yet, the use of cellular telephones and the popularity of fax machines in business has used up many more of the area codes that they had considered before this time. If they end up running out of area codes, a second type of numerical system may need to be put into place in order to handle the situation.

The next three digits of the telephone number help you to break down even more where the phone call is originating from. Typically, each town has its own three digits that exist within the area code and it might even be able to help you to differentiate between a cellular number and a landline number.

Tracing a telephone number can easily be done if you know the full 10 digit number that was calling you. They area code will help you to narrow down the overall region where the telephone number originated from and the next three digits will help you to narrow it down even further. It is also possible for you to use the last four digits to reverse the telephone number and see who it was that was calling you.
